Wandering Camera

Album 363
(Translated b

The topic of  this album is Gromovskoye cemetery and the neighbor streets and houses near Baltic railway station  (behind the Bypass channel, if to go from the center of the city)

Some almost similar buildings along the Mitrophanievsky highway.
I think they’ve been built at the beginning of XX century.

Gromovskoye old believe cemetery.

At first I’ve planned to call this album “Mitrophanievskoye cemetery”, but later I received a specification: in spite of the fact that Mitrophanievskoye was very near, there’s almost nothing left from it. But I didn’t change the text. Let's consider it as historical digression J

Mitrophanievskoye cemetery appeared here in 1831, when almost 5 thousand people had died of a cholera (the imperial courtyard has moved to Tsarskoye Selo at that period). To not distribute an infection, the buries have been made outside of city limits – then there was a Tentelevka village. The cemetery got its name – Mitrophanievskoye – from the wooden church, that stood here once, long ago.

There’re some famous people buried here: rear admiral V.Rykov,  general P.Liprandi, senator P.Sumarokov, pianist M.Shimanovskaya, writer M.Pyliyaev, poet L.Mey, writer I.Lazhechnikov.

The cemetery was officially closed in 1927. Originally it’s territory was about 50 hectares.

And now – about Gromovskoye cemetery.

The cemetery looks half-abandoned, though some modern burial places are seen.

The cemetery is obliged by its name to a merchant -the trustee of an old believe society Fedul Gromov. In 1820s he has offered the site of the ground for a burial place of Old Believers (Old Believers – those, who not accepted reforms of Russian orthodox church and  were exposed to prosecutions for it).

Today the territory of Gromovskoye cemetery is reduced with 4 up to 0.9 hectare.

The pond, as it known, exists here for a long time too.

Let’s take a look at the neighbor houses, at the street with the same name

The buildings are typical for the factories of beginning of the XX century.
The factories are still here. This – is a City mechanical bakery.
Built in 1913-1915. The architector was an engineer  Schmelling (together with Nagel).
It is the sample of industrial architecture in a modernist styl

This is the building at Varshavskaya str, 44

And now we’ve walked much more to the south, by Moskovskiy avenue. But I included this photo to the album anyway, because the walk was at the same day.

Children's school of arts N5 named in a honor of E.Mravinskiy

The architectors are V.Popov and U.Kozhin, 1971
The frieze is well executed.
