This album is devoted to the “Polytechnitcheskaya”
subway station surroundings, where “Saint-Petersburg State Polytechnical
University” (until 1990 - “Polytechnical Institute”, then –
“Saint-Petersburg State Polytechnical University”) - its buildings and the
park - are situated.
Polytechnical University might take first place among technical institutes
and universities in Saint-Petersburg.
Though I was trying to join the University, I didn’t learn here (if I had
join, I would have dropped out), so I can hardly determine the purposes of
the buildings. So if you have something to supplement with, I am pleased
to listen to.
All Institute’s buildings are located on
quiet side-streets and surrounded by green trees and shrubs.
The restored Pokrov Church is located
nearby the University. The church was built in 1913-1914 by
I.V.Padlevsky, closed in 1932 and reopened in 1992. The strange thing
about the church - its altar turns not to the east (as it’s supposed to
be in the Orthodox Church), but to the west.
Some of the red-brick buildings were
built as a student hostel, but later studying buildings and living
buildings for academic staff were organized there. Several buildings
(“professor’s buildings”) were intended for living from the beginning.
Student hostel were built later at the “Lesnaya”.
This building contains Electrical Machine Department and Laboratory.
Yes, I knew it from the tablet.
I
believe the following tablets are hanged on the same building (or
opposite one, I am not sure):
“The outstanding scientist Ivan Ivanovich Kirillov worked here since
1934 until 1993”
“Faculty of Power Engineering. Atomic and Heat Energy-converting
Machinery Department.”
“Faculty of Power Engineering. Turbomotors Department”
“Faculty of Civil Engineering. Material Strength Department”
Radiophysical Science and Engineering
Faculty building.
There are several memorable tablets almost on every building. For
example:
“The outstanding soviet physicist academician A.F.Ioffe worked here from
1906 until 1948. He was a founder of Physics and Mechanics Faculty.”
“The outstanding soviet physicist, vice-president of the Soviet Union’s
Academy of Science academician Boris Pavlovich Konstantinov (1910-1969)
worked here from 1946 until 1969.”
“The outstanding soviet physicist academician Pyotr Ivanovich Lukirsky
(1894-1954) worked in this building from 1945 until 1954.”
“The outstanding soviet scientist in the field of automatic control
systems, Hero of Socialist Labor, State and Lenin prize winner,
professor Dr. Taras Nikolaevich Sokolov (1911-1979) worked here since
1952 until 1972”
This strange-looking monument made from
the piece of glass contains the following tablet:
“Here the artesian
well was situated during the 1942-1943 blockade winter. It supplied with
water families of Polytechnical Institute’s staff and two military
hospitals located nearby.”
The passage between old and relatively
new buildings. To the tower at the background we will come later.
The institute was open in the 1902. At that time the city didn’t
reach this place and it belong to the Sosnovsky Forest-Park that is
still located nearby, but occupies less area.
There are the following tablets on this
building:
Without comments
As I was prompted, it’s old
“Hydrobuilding” - the building of Hydromachine Engineering Faculty.
“Hydrob” is a hard-working building – students most of the faculties’
studies here (including Engineering Cybernetics Faculty). At the left
bottom corner of the picture the passage to the new “Hydrob” can be
seen.
The August was strange this year –
because of sharp temperature’s changing autumn began in summer and the
spots of the fallen yellow leaves can be seen here and there.
Tablets on the building:
"..1998.
:machine building engineer, professor Dr. Konstantin Pavlovich
Seleznyov. Honoured Worker and Scientist. Polytecnical Institute's
Rector in 1973-1983."
"The famous Soviet scientist-electrician Leonid
Robertovich Neyman lived here from 1937 until 1975."
And this is University’s park bordering
upon the buildings.
On the other side of the park something
modern and special was built. The area is supposed to belong to the
University. As I was prompted it’s Lyceum for gifted pupils, and it is
belonged to the Physical Science and Technical Engineering Faculty.
The Lyceum was formed on Jores Alfyorov’s initiative and built in
1998-1999 by Turkish builders.
Water tower. To say correctly it’s a
tower with water-reservoir for hydrodynamic experiments.
There are
tablets on it:
“SPbPTU
Hydromachine Engineering Department of the Power Engineering Faculty”
“The founder of Hydromachine Engineering Department, an outstanding
scientist I.N.Voznesensky worked here from 1925 until 1946.”
And this is the main building (as the
following three pictures)
It was built in 1899-1902 by E.F.Wirrich.
The front side of the building turns to the Polytechnicheskaya
Street, but now it is covered with scaffolding.
It is mentioned that front side’s design
reminds the one of High Technical School in Berlin.
“Here in the institute’s assembly hall on
17 of May 1917 Michael Ivanovich Kalinin took the chair at the worker’s
and student’s meeting, where Vladimir Ilyich Lenin made a speech.”
“Michael Ivanovich Kalinin also made a speech here on 16 of October 1926
on the occasion of Polytechnical Institute’s 25th anniversary.”
In Soviet times the institute was named after M.I.Kalinin, that’s
why, in particular, the tablet was fixed here. We know about Kalinin,
that in 1919 he was municipal service’s commissar and also he created a
commune with common property and economy. It was an everyday occurrence
at that time, but the interesting thing about it, that Kalinin himself
lived in this commune.
"To Polytechnicians, given their lives
for motherland and communism.
Your deeds and feat of arms will be
remembered from generation to generation."
(The monument was raised in 1967).
The Lattice that divides park from the
Polytechnicheskaya street.
On the other side of the street Ioffe
Physico-Technical Institute (“Phystech”) is located. It was found in
1918, but the new building was built in 70th.
Lectures and practical works for university’s students are held
there. There are some research institutes on the both hands of the
“Phystech” (if they still remain there, of course).
